Things to do in London this weekend (October 27 – 29)

Mike Daw returns with everything to eat, drink and see this weekend

London is often a collision of new meets old, and this week's guide serves the point rather nicely: there are new restaurants from old favourites, and old favourites doing new things, as well as a fresh retelling of an familiar story. Oh, and there's Mexican wrestling too, just because.

This is the best of what to eat, see, do and drink this weekend.

The hot table: Café Kitty

Not some feline-friendly café, but the latest restaurant from Kitty Fishers and Cora Pearl, two deserved darlings of the restaurant world. This weekend is the last chance to enjoy 50 per cent off during the soft opening, making dishes like the mushroom thermidor and the "very" Welsh rarebit even more appealing.

The masterclass: Corrigan’s Mayfair

Chef Richard Corrigan is hosting an intimate masterclass for a handful of guests in his eponymous Mayfair restaurant, showcasing his seasonal approach to classic British and Irish fare. The day is set to begin with coffee and fresh pastries, before Corrigan commences his demonstration, offering a career’s worth of kitchen tips for the home cook. A hearty lunch follows.

The drinking den: Refuel at the Soho Hotel: Bars of Britain

Refuel at the Soho hotel is set to host a selection of Britain’s best bars, everywhere from Scotland and Wales to Cornwall and Cumbria. The daily pop-ups from the likes of Lab 22 in Cardiff, Edinburgh’s Bramble and Ci Ci’s in Padstow should entice even the staunchest of Sober October observers to break their vow.

The culture fix: Hamnet

Manuel Harlan/RSC

Based on the best-selling book by Maggie O’Farrell, the RSC’s London staging of this endearing, touching play explores the life of Shakespeare’s son. As much for lovers of contemporary literature as fans of the bard, Hamnet is a must see.

Until February 17, 2 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0HH, rsc.org.uk

The art fix: Jo Holdsworth "Figures"

British artist Jo Holdsworth has opened her latest show, Figures, with myriad depictions of gently-placed silhouettes against the bluing backdrops of both obvious London skylines and imagined abstractions. One worth making an artful detour for.

The party: Night of the Living Luchas

There are some niche Halloween parties about town this weekend, and then there’s this one. It’s a night of costumes, comedy, Mexican wrestling, death-defying acrobatics and zombies. Dubbed a “RetroFutureVerse” (we’ve no idea) it’s truly a night to expect the unexpected. Expect an evening of sheer madness.

The ticket to book now (for later): London Philanthropic Orchestra

Intimate London concerts held in ethereal settings have become a popular form of cultural currency. In November, a collection of amateur and professional musicians will host a concert to raise vital funds for Lewisham Food Bank, with an intimate, free-to-attend performance at Lady of Lourdes Church, near Hither Green. Overseen by George Salmon, above, expect classical favourites from some of London’s top classical musical talent — the professional musicians are a mix of members from the English National Opera Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English National Ballet Philharmonic Orchestra and more. One to savour, and for a good cause too.
